Green Mountain

Writers Conference

How to register

Now that we've enticed you with our surroundings and our writers, you'll probably want to know how to register for the conference.

Cost for the weeklong session should be made directly to the conference with this registration. Given the Covid challenges, we would want participants to have had vaccines and to be willing to adhere with Vermont regulations regarding masks, distancing etc. The conference will not be held if the current two-week quarantine for out-of-staters or people who have traveled out of state is still in effect. The conference cost includes workshops, readings, snacks, and day use of the Brandon Inn's indoor and outdoor facilities. Lodging for four nights from Monday, August 2, until Friday after lunch on August 6, is to be paid separately and directly to the Brandon Inn at a reduced rate for conference attendees. Call to make your registration at 800-639-8685. Double occupancy per person will be $588.00 while single occupancy per person will be $824.00. Lodging costs include breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the option of having one dinner off-site with a reduction in lodging cost; interest in the latter option should be noted at the time of making a reservation. Please mention the conference when you call to make reservations to get the special rate. Those not staying at the inn can order lunch from the full menu at $20 per meal, exclusive of tax, tip and alcohol; day-trippers can stay for dinner, a three-course dinner at $44, which includes tax and tip.

Register and pay in full. Please call 802-236-6133 for availability after May 1 or feel free to email the director, Yvonne Daley, at

Again, this year, we are offering a discount for early registration while also acknowledging that, because we are having a conference nearly half our usual size, we will fill up early. See below:

  • $650 before July 30
Payment can be easily made by check or credit card, or using Paypal. Please email conference director Yvonne Daley at and she will send you an electronic invoice. A fee of $10 will be charged.
A non-refundable deposit of $75 must be sent within one week of on-line or telephone registration or accompanying a mailed registration. Please follow up online and phone registrations with a mailed copy.

One full and two partial scholarships are available. The full fellowship was established this year in memory of Dwight Harshbarger, a writer and frequent attendee of the conference. Dwight used his remarkable research skills to uncover industrial and war-time crimes and write about them in engaging novels and short stories. Two of his novels focused on industrial safety failures in West Virginia - Witness at Hawks Nest about tunneling through Gauley Mountain to divert the New River for hydropower (resulting in the most deaths as a result of industrial disaster in U.S. history), and Valley at Risk: Shelter in Place about a chemical spill in the Kanawha River Valley. His final book, A Quiet Hero: A Novel of Resistance in WWII France, tells the true story of clandestine work by French Gen. Rene Carmille to thwart the Nazi-ordered census of Jews, saving many lives as a result. Applicants should focus on issues that address serious issues affecting the safety and health of individuals, especially those in industry, war or science. If you wish to apply, please write a short essay telling us about yourself, your project and your progress thus far, along with a short example of your work, sent to the above postal or email addresses.
